Built in 1865 this Hotel's individuality remains as valuable as its independence. The most notable feature of the interior is its magnificent Portland stone staircase; reported to be the tallest unsupported stone staircase in Europe. The paintings on its ceiling were executed by Ferdinando Galli (1816-97), an Italian painter then briefly working in England (he exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1866). The Petersham looks out across the Petersham Meadows to the bend in the Thames. The meadows are protected from development by an Act of Parliament passed in 1902, and renewed in 2002, to safeguard the famous view from Richmond Hill; best seen from the Terrace Walk at the top of Nightingale Lane. This view has been painted by many famous artists, including Sir Joshua Reynolds (for whom Wick House, next door to the Wick, was built) and J M W Turner (who lived across the river in Twickenham for many years). The Petersham Restaurant is unique, benefitting from panoramic, floor-to-ceiling views of the famous bend in the River Thames and surrounding Petersham Meadows. Gaze out at the view from every table and enjoy a warm and welcoming atmosphere, friendly service and fantastic food. Head Chef, Jean-Didier Gouges prepares uncomplicated dishes with fresh and seasonal produce in a modern British style. Guests can enjoy fine wines from the Cellars whilst unwinding in the bar or on the terrace. There are also several private rooms for dinner parties and receptions including The Terrace Suite, The River Room and The Cellars. The Alcove is a private area off the main restaurant, seating up to 10 guests. It offers the same classical dining that can be experienced in the restaurant with all the privacy of a secluded area. A haven for wildlife, the deer are free to roam around; a vast contrast to those in the day of Henry VIII and Elizabeth I, who hunted these animals to pass the time of day. Hidden deep in the park is the Isabella Plantation; an oasis of lush green woodland, famous for its rhododendrons, azaleas and camellias. High speed free wireless internet access is available to all guests and visitors throughout the hotel. Guest rooms have interactive LCD televisions with ports or lap top connection, messaging service, movie & satellite channels. Private dining & reception rooms. Meeting & training facilities. Wheelchair accessible rooms and public areas. Multi lingual personnel. Room Service 24 hours. Complimentary car park.
