Originally a vast farming estate, Deans Place Country Hotel, Alfriston became a private hotel at the beginning of the 20th century. Since then the estate has evolved into a highly regarded Sussex Hotel and Restaurant combining heritage charm with impeccable service and tranquillity. Deans Place Hotel today occupies a beautiful piece of the Sussex countryside – between the sea and the rolling hills of the South Downs - set on the banks of the Cuckmere River and surrounded by four acres of lush gardens. The idyllic position offers exhilarating contrasts; the bustle of a village high street, dinner alfresco on a summer's evening, afternoon tea in a Victorian garden or supper before a crackling log fire. At Deans Place Country Hotel, is just step away from the unspoilt 14th-century village of Alfriston and a short ride from historic bustling Lewes with its grand castle, and the seaside resorts of Brighton and Eastbourne. For music lovers, the hotel is just a few miles from Glyndebourne where in summer a season of world-class opera can be enjoyed.
Deans Place Hotel is situated at the Southern end of the 14th century Alfriston Village. This was formerly a manor farm estate. The earliest known record of a building on the site when it was part of the Frog Firle Estate, which belonged to Wilmington Priory in the 12th Century. The building, then on the site of the present Deans Place, was used as a ‘Pest House’ or hospital for patients with contagious diseases. Good food is naturally high on the list of priorities at Deans Place, in both the Restaurant and Bar, the emphasis is on fresh seasonal dishes, cooked to perfection by Head Chef Stuart Dunley and his team. Dining is available 7 days a week for lunch and dinner, including traditional Sunday roasts and menu classics with the innovative twists so intrinsic to modern cooking. In summer, dine alfresco on the terrace surrounded by tranquil gardens and the majestic backdrop of the South Downs or in winter relax by the open log fires. In the afternoon, indulge in a delicious cream tea in the Bar, with warm scones baked in the on-site ovens and heaps of cream and jam. Nestled between the sea and the rolling hills of the South Downs, this gentle stretch of land, captures the very essence of quintessential England and the South Coast. Deans Place has four acres of beautiful gardens for guests to wander through, a heated outdoor swimming pool, croquet and boules on the lawn, and plenty of tucked-away nooks and crannies where guests can hide with a good book.
