A former warehouse of a city tobacco lord and over 300 years old. The street name of Virginia Street comes from this. It features a turnpike stairway, built the opposite way from a castle to show that they were friendly, no fighting on this stairway! When trade routes between Europe and Americas were opened the River Clyde found itself well positioned for trade in tobacco. The journey between Virginia and Glasgow took 20 days less than between Virginia and London which meant that almost half the tobacco coming into Europe was distributed through Glasgow. The Merchant City is at the historic and cultural heart of Glasgow. The Merchants who grew the city's once vast prosperity lived and worked in this area. Today this area has seen a remarkable rebirth and features the remarkable architectural splendour of the magnificent 18th century St Andrews in the Square or the sublime City Halls and Fruitmarket. Guests can enjoy a continental breakfast (included or upgrade to full scottish breakfast for £3 per person per night) before embarking on their day in Glasgow.
