Pembroke College provides a tranquil setting surrounded by attractive architecture and gardens. Within easy reach of restaurants and pubs, cinemas and theatres, the college is a short walk from the Ashmolean Museum and Bodleian Library and Christ Church Meadows is just across the road. The college is now able to offer visitors accommodation (both ensuite and shared toilet/shower) in its student bedrooms during vacations. Rooms are grouped together in traditional staircases and are provided with linen, towels and toiletries. Please note Pembroke College is unable to accommodate hen/stag groups, babies, children and young people. All rooms are non smoking.
Founded in 1624, Pembroke College was granted its charter by King James I of England and VI of Scotland and took its name from the Chancellor of the University at that time, William Herbert, 3rd Earl of Pembroke. The Chapel, now known as the Damon Wells Chapel, was built in 1732 in a classical style and the Hall, which dates back to 1848 has a small cupola and a roof built to the medieval hammer beam design. The college was a predominantly male domain until 1979 when female undergraduates were admitted. Famous alumni include Samuel Johnson who came to Pembroke in 1728, leaving just a year later when he ran out of money. He never did finish his degree but Oxford University awarded him with an honorary one much later in life. Individual private bookings are room only, breakfast is not included. Group conference reservations include breakfast in Hall as arranged by the conference. Farthings Cafe - Pembroke has it's own on-site Cafe where you can purchase breakfast, drinks, snacks & more, accepting cash and card. Open Monday - Friday 8.00am - 6.00pm. Pembroke College is based around three main quadrangles: Old Quad (dating from 1600s), Chapel Quad (containing the Chapel and Hall, completed in 1848) and North Quad (opened in 1962). Guests are welcome to visit the Chapel when not in use. WiFi is available througout College: A free personalised user account is provided for Conference guests. The Cloud - a public WiFi network - is available for individual private guests. If you are not already a member, the first 4 hours are free.
All guests are requested to report to the Porters' Lodge on arrival (located at the main entrance to the college) where you will be given a key and directed to your room(s). Guests arriving at the weekend or after 7.00pm can access the college by ringing the doorbell and the duty porter will let them in. The Lodge is staffed 24 hours a day. Gloucester Green Coach and Bus Station is only a 10 minute walk and Oxford Railway Station is approximately 20 minutes walk away. There are also taxis and local buses available at both locations.
