A Grade I listed Tudor building which was possibly built by the last Abbot of Bury St. Edmunds. Mary Tudor, Dowager Queen of France and Duchess of Suffolk visited the property and the Abbot, to commemorate the royal visit had her coat of arms placed over the door to the gatehouse. The highly decorative brick gatehouse was built circa 1530 and has a chamber overlooking the entrance with a wall-painting, known as the 'Four Ages Man', thought to date from 1575. Traces of paint elsewhere in the room would suggest that the whole room may originally have been painted. A colonnade links the gatehouse to the house which was originally surrounded by a moat long since filled in. The property is packed with many original features such as the largest inglenook fireplace in Suffolk, exposed beams and original oak floors. Enjoy the award winning full English breakfast is served in the period dining room. Choose from a cooked breakfast including eggs from the resident hens and fresh locally sourced produce. Cereals, toast, fruit, fruit juices, fresh tea and coffee are also available as are additional vegetarian options. Enjoy a home made afternoon tea or dinner on request. Relax in the tranquil 6 acres of grounds around the hall which include woods, streams and gardens with outdoor seating. Please note: due to the streams that flow through the grounds it is not advised to leave children unattended.
